Getting Older Doesn't Have to Mean Slowing Down
“After you reach a certain age, they think you’re over. Well, I’ll never be over”
Dolly Parton.
Ask most people what "getting older" means for their body, and you'll hear the same list: stiffer, slower, more aches, less capacity. We might see decline as inevitable, it's just what happens.
But that's not the full picture. Dolly Parton shone brighter as she aged (with the help of a few rhinestones!).
Your nervous system doesn't have an expiry date. It's still coordinating everything it always has: movement, healing, adaptation, for as long as you're alive. What changes with age is how well the signal gets through. Decades of poor posture, old injuries, stress, and simply moving less all take their toll on the spine. And when the spine moves less freely, the nervous system has to work harder to keep that communication clear.
This is where Chiropractic care can become especially valuable as we age. By locating and correcting subluxations (loss of joint motion in the spine that affects the nervous system), we're not turning back the clock, but restoring the conditions your nervous system needs to keep doing what it's always done: adapt, regulate, and heal. Clients often notice they move more freely, sleep better, and feel steadier on their feet. Not because anything is fixed, but because we've cleared the way for the body to do what it's designed to do.
I see this most clearly in grandparents who come in wanting to keep up with their grandchildren: get down on the floor, go for a walk, pick up their toddler without wincing. That's not too much to ask of your body. It's what it's built for, at any age, given the right support.
Ageing well isn't about fighting your body. It's about staying connected to it. Giving your nervous system every chance to keep communicating clearly, for as long as possible.
My amazing Mum (who is thriving in her late 70's), says "The most annoying thing about Chiropractic is knowing how you can be!" Please share this email with anyone you think would like to shine brighter as they age.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Books:
Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity - Peter Attia. This is a very information dense book! It is about making choices that impact our 8th & 9th decades. He talks about the Medicine 3.0 focusing on prevention and personalised care, emphasising the roles exercise, nutrition and emotional stress ( the 3 environments I often talk of) that have a real impact on our future health.
Train For Your Old Lady Body - Elizabeth Davies. This is a very practical book that gives the why & how women can build a strong body as they age. Women do face different challenges from men as our hormonal profile changes. Movement has to become a way of life to see long term benefits.
Podcasts:
I have really loved listening to Trevor Noah's podcast What Now? His laugh is infectious, and he has a lovely way of exploring some challenging topics. I particularly enjoyed the episode with Brene Brown. Give it a listen here, and let me know what you think?
